The European Union is considering banning a number of chemicals used in hair dyes because of safety concerns.

The ban is being pondered since the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products was not given any evidence that these 49 substances are considered safe for human health when used in cosmetic products.

This is the last step in the Union's ongoing attempt to ban any potentially harmful hair dyes from being used in its member states.

The Malta Standards Authority has distributed the list to a number of local stakeholders, including importers and manufacturers, asking them to submit any comments or information on the possible impact of banning the products.

According to the EU's public consultation document, the regulation of the substances is based on outdated data, which does not meet the latest scientific requirements.

Local stakeholders have until September 29 to give comments or information related to the ban.
