I refer to the letter Lights In The Wrong Places by Joseph Schembri in which he criticised "the authorities" for illuminating the St Paul's Bay and Zebbug/Mdina bypasses and for switching off the Mdina illuminations at around 2 a.m. The letter was published with prominence on August 21.

Unlike Mr Schembri, I can imagine the howls of criticism which would have arisen had the two bypasses been left in pitch darkness without any illumination whatsoever. I can imagine how the government would have been castigated for leaving the unfinished part of the St Paul's Bay bypass in the dark making it a virtual death trap.

Mr Schembri, is entitled to his opinion, however, I fail to see why his letter was published boxed in the centre of the letters page giving it undue prominence and giving the ordinary reader the impression that Mr Schembri's opinion is authoritative and enjoys editorial support.

Editor's note: The publication and position of letters does not depend on whether they are deemed authoritative or enjoy editorial support. Readers have every right to express their opinions, irrespective of whether one agrees with them or not.
