Argentine Gabriel Paletta has left Liverpool to join Boca Juniors for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old central defender arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2006 after impressing at the 2005 World Youth Championships, which Argentina went on to win.

Paletta made his debut in a 4-3 League Cup win over Reading at Anfield in 2006, scoring in the second half, and went on to make eight appearances for the club.

However, with opportunities limited, Liverpool agreed to let him go.

Materazzi released from hospital

Inter defender Marco Materazzi is out of hospital after surgery following a freak injury during last week's 3-1 international friendly defeat in Hungary.

An opponent fell on top of him, rupturing a vein inside the thigh muscle, so emergency surgery was needed to stem the internal bleeding.

Doctors said Materazzi could have ended his career had the operation been delayed and he is expected to be out of action for between two and four months.

Gilberto Silva bears no grudge

Brazil midfielder Gilberto Silva will not quit Arsenal despite being overlooked for the club captaincy. The 30-year-old, who led the side for much of last season in the absence of Thierry Henry, has yet to play this term after being given an extended break following his involvement in the Copa America.

Henry's departure was expected to result in Gilberto replacing him as skipper but manager Arsene Wenger instead opted for William Gallas.

Gilberto said: "I had a face-to-face about it with the manager and sorted it out but I cannot change his feelings.

"I have to carry on... this is an important season for all of us at the club."

Ferguson forced me out - Heinze

Gabriel Heinze said he was forced out of Old Trafford after falling out with manager Alex Ferguson. The Argentine completed a £6.8m move to Real Madrid last week after his preferred transfer to Liverpool was blocked.

Heinze said his relationship with Ferguson broke down when he returned from a knee injury to play at the 2006 World Cup.

"I upset him and things were different from then on. I had to leave," he said.

"I went to Spain for recovery but Ferguson thought it would be impossible for me to play in Germany.... things were not the same after that."

Liverpool duo down with injury

Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia will miss the second leg of Liverpool's Champions League qualifier with Toulouse tomorrow.

Hyypia suffered a suspected broken nose against Sunderland and defensive partner Carragher a possible broken rib in the 2-0 win.

Rafael Benitez said: "Sami lost the vision in his left eye and may well have broken his nose. Jamie is in a lot of pain and I'm not sure if either will be involved against Toulouse. We'll have to wait and see."

Steven Gerrard is another possible absentee for the Toulouse game after the England midfielder missed Saturday's win with a broken toe.

Spurs chief says sorry

Paul Kemsley, the Tottenham vice-chairman, has apologised to Martin Jol following the speculation surrounding the club.

Spurs officials were spotted holding talks with Sevilla coach Juande Ramos last week, leaving Jol's future at White Hart Lane in jeopardy.

Kemsley said: "I am sorry about last weekend's escapade and for the damage and upset it has caused to both Martin Jol, the club and the supporters.

"The truth is that we never offered Martin's job to Juande Ramos no matter what anybody thinks."

Ranieri wants more

Juventus started their Serie A commitments with a clear 5-1 victory over Livorno on Saturday but Claudio Ranieri was not entirely happy with the performance.

"The team continued to believe in itself and played its usual style," Ranieri said. "We made a few too many mistakes, though. There were a few uncertainties in defence. We were condemned in the pre-season friendlies because we were unable to take our chances, but that wasn't an issue this time."

David Trezeguet netted a hat-trick and substitute Vincenzo Iaquinta - who replaced Alessandro Del Piero - bagged a brace.

Owen insists on staying

Michael Owen assured Newcastle yesterday that he is not eyeing a move elsewhere. The 27-year-old England international admitted to a release clause in his contract, believed to be about £11m, but has no intention of exercising it.

"There was a release clause that no one was supposed to be privy to, but if people go and mention that I can't help it," he said.

"Since I've been at Newcastle, people have been thinking that I'll leave. A lot think there's an agenda... there's not."

Owen has struggled for fitness ever since he joined the Magpies from Real Madrid in August 2005.

Emerson almost quit

Emerson was so upset with Real Madrid that he considered retiring if he was not allowed to move elsewhere.

"I couldn't take it anymore. At a certain stage I wanted to just end it with football," the Brazilian midfielder said.

His negotiations with Milan dragged on for weeks and it all seemed to collapse when Real changed their mind over a loan deal, demanding £5m for a permanent transfer.

"The situation was untenable in Madrid and I just couldn't focus there."
