Two journalists, Vanessa Macdonald and Joanna Ripard, and two photographers, Matthew Mirabelli and Darrin Zammit Lupi, on the staff of The Times and The Sunday Times are among the 29 finalists of the 17th Malta Journalism Awards who were announced last Wednesday.

The Times contributors Martin Debattista and Benny Pace, and The Sunday Times contributor Lino Bugeja are also among the finalists named from 45 established journalists who made submissions in 12 categories. The winners will be announced at an awards night in October.

The finalists are:

Print Journalism (News), sponsored by HSBC Bank Malta plc: Vanessa Macdonald (The Times), Brandon Pisani (l-Orizzont/It-Torca) and Victor Vella (l-Orizzont/It-Torca);

Print Journalism (Features), sponsored by Vodafone Malta Ltd: Martin Debattista (The Times - i-tech section), Vanessa Macdonald (The Times/Pink magazine), and Joanna Ripard (The Sunday Times/Child magazine);

Photography Journalism, sponsored by the Farsons Foundation: Ben Borg Cardona (The Malta Independent/Agence France Presse), Matthew Mirabelli (The Times), and Darrin Zammit Lupi (The Times/Reuters);

Overseas Assignments, sponsored by Emirates Airline: Brandon Pisani (l-Orizzont/It-Torca) and Alvin Scicluna (TVM);

The finalists and winner, from among 25 submissions in the National Language in Journalism category will be announced during the presentation ceremony.

The judges, who will be named on the awards night, are currently drawing up a report on the submissions' standards.

The recipient of the Gold Award, which recognises outstanding career-long commitment to the profession, will also be announced on the night.
