Malta's Darren Gilford failed in his bid to improve on his 100m record during the heats of the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, yesterday.

Gilford, a silver medallist in the 100m at the Monaco GSSE, ran in the second of the eight heats at the Nagai Stadium.

He finished sixth in the nine-man race in 10.92... 0.38 of a second outside his national mark set in May 2005.

Overall, the Pembroke Athleta sprinter placed 45th from 68 starters in the 100m race.

Gilford's heat was won by Brendan Christian, of Antigua and Barbuda, in 10.16. He finished ahead of Britain's Craig Pickering (10.24) and Bahamas's Derrick Atkins (10.25).

Meanwhile, Malta's other representative at the championships, Charlene Attard, will be in action this morning when she takes part in the 100m heats.
