According to statistics issued by WasteServ, each year, every household in Malta and Gozo creates approximately one tonne of waste.
When we talk about waste and how to lessen its impact on the environment we have to reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing the amount of waste we produce is by far the most effective way to battle the flow of garbage into the landfill. Packaging makes up about half our garbage by volume, one-third by weight.
Green Trade, importers of Alara breakfast muesli, is a pioneer in Malta in reducing extra packaging in muesli products. Recently Green Trade have launched the sustainable range of products, a new range that is packed in an innovative brown paper bag to reduce packaging waste. Alara is serious about sustainability. This has reduced the weight of packaging used per pack by almost 75 per cent which is great news as it means that less resources are being used. Alara's aim is to become a carbon negative, zero waste manufacturing site by 2010. In fact these muesli products are handmade in a factory powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.
The sustainable range has been developed to provide a choice of very different eating experiences. Every one of the six products has a particular taste and texture. It has been recognised as The Best Product Food & Drink at the show and rewarded with the most prestigious award.

Goji & Yacon - traditional texture, unusual sweetness from Goji, Yacon & Kamut. Fruit, Seed & Spice - traditional texture, 47 per cent variety of seeds and luxurious fruits, exotic aroma of cinnamon. Very Berry - crispy and chewy, very fruity with wonderful fragrance of abundant strawberries. Crispy Coconut Crunch - light and very crispy. The taste of freshly toasted coconut is irresistible! Date with Cacao - traditional texture with unexpected crunch. Bitter sweet taste of chocolate. Active - most unusual, everything about this muesli is different. Very light from puffed amaranth, sweetened only with apple, with lots of seeds and nuts. It is also gluten free, low in natural sugars, high in minerals and vitamins for metabolism and energy, and is also fairly traded.
All products are made without added sugar, salt or fats. Every muesli has enough seeds, fruits and whole grains to provide healthy balanced nutrition.
