Enemalta Corporation said extensive power cuts throughout Malta yesterday were caused by a major fault at the Delimara power station at around 12.30 p.m., when two gas turbines tripped.

As a result, electricity supply in various localities was affected, including Birzebbuga, Marsaxlokk, Zabbar, Tarxien, Fgura in the south and Swieqi, St. Julians, Sliema, San Gwann, Balzan, Birkirkara and Sta Venera in the middle of the island.

Enemalta engineers and duty personnel took immediate action and various localities in the central parts had power back by 1.30 p.m. Power in all other localities was switched on by 4 p.m.

An investigation is still being carried out to locate the cause of the fault in order to be able to prevent similar incidents in the future, the corporation said.

Enemalta reminded customers that they can report faults and power interruptions on freephone number 8007 2224.
