Going through The Times of August 11, I came across a photo of Minister Louis Galea and Nationalist MP Mario Galea meeting youths from Lithuania, Romania and Estonia on an exchange visit which was organised by the Zejtun Scout Group. The theme was "how to care for the environment". The heading struck me and brought to mind the Iklin Scouts Group who came up with the bright idea of "caring for the environment in a concrete way".

In fact, this year, the Iklin Scouts Group has successfully launched an eco-friendly project which deserves public praise. They took the initiative and involved the local council of Iklin in a clean-up campaign targeted specifically at plastic water bottles. To their credit, they involved all the population of Iklin! Through the scouts' intervention plus the joint efforts of the local council members and the Iklin residents, seven huge skips have to date been filled with plastic bottles that would simply have gone on to pollute our landfill sites. Like every successful plan, the workings are simple but require hard work! Every Wednesday these young scouts brave the heat and eagerly go round our village collecting plastic bottles.

One particular Scout is even joined by his parents in this endeavour. Their determination has been met with similar enthusiasm by all Iklin residents whose co-operation has resulted in such a large collection of plastic bottles.

The scout group's aim is to instil in its young members a sense of environmental responsibility through active, hands-on experience. Prosit Iklin Scouts for your unwavering commitment to our village and the environment. Truly an initiative which deserves to be emulated.

Well done and keep it up!
