A young woman was yesterday remanded in custody after being charged with a string of thefts from beaches, while her partner was also denied bail after he too was charged with theft as well as relapsing.

Emma Grech, 19, of Pietà, was accused of committing eight thefts of handbags and rucksacks from beaches in Birzebbuga and the Delimara area between June 29 and August 15. The bags contained seven mobile phones and wallets.

Generoso Barbara, 28, of Zejtun, was accused of committing thefts from Marsaxlokk between March and April this year and relapsing.

Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri acted as counsel to the accused.

Inspector Michael Mallia prosecuted.
