By now the beach may have started losing its appeal, so Children's Cinema Day could be the solution for parents seeking to keep their kids entertained before bundling them back off to school.

KRS Film Distributors will hold this anticipated event on September 1, offering a choice of 18 films - including seven new releases - at a reduced admission price of Lm1 (€2.33), with accompanying adults paying Lm1.50 (€3.49).

The films, which will feature on 39 big screens, include comedies, fantasy adventures, dramas and no less than six animated features.

KRS general manager Charles Pace said children always looked forward to this day, because they saw it as a way to catch up on their favourite films before the scholastic year started and the grind of homework set in.

"There's still the thrill of the cinema for children, despite the popularity of watching DVDs at home," he said.

Mr Pace said that last September admissions had surpassed 19,000 people and they were anticipating a similar figure this year because of the good line-up of films on offer.

Among the expected favourites is the animated fairy tale Happily N' Ever After, where an alliance of evil-doers look to take over Fairy Tale Land.

The action comedy Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, which sees the four adolescent turtles gifted in the art of the ninja continue their adventures, should also be a fun choice.

The comedy Firehouse Dog, which stars Rexxx, Hollywood's top canine star who is adopted into a shabby firehouse, should keep the whole family entertained.

Another film which should go down well with the family is the animated adventure comedy Meet the Robinsons - if you think your family's different, wait until you meet the family of the future.

Older children too have a wide choice of films, from the live action film Transformers to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Simpsons Movie, all of which have been given a 12 rating.

The choice of films includes the action comedy Rush Hour 3, the comedy of biblical proportions Evan Almighty and the animated comedy Surf's Up on the world of penguins.

Shrek the Third, Are We Done Yet?, The Reef, Spider-Man 3, Mr Bean's Holiday, Bridge to Terabithia, and the Fantastic Four and the Rise of the Silver Surfer complete the line-up.

Children's Cinema Day will be celebrated at Eden Century Cinemas in St George's Bay; Empire Cinemas, Bugibba; Embassy Cinema World, Valletta; The New Sun City Cine Palais, Marsascala, and the Citadel in Gozo.

Films at all the cinemas in Malta start at 9 a.m. and run until 7 p.m., while the two-screen cinema at the Citadel in Gozo will have children's shows between 4 and 6 p.m.

A film mini poster will be given with every child ticket purchased.

Booking for tickets at all cinemas opens on Friday.
