Our Lady looked on yesterday as two groups from the Mgarr parish yesterday made their bids to carry the statue of Santa Marija in the procession at last night's village feast.

According to the long-standing tradition, the group that makes the highest offer gets to carry the statue. This year, Wistin Vella's group made the winning offer of Lm2,500, which will go towards the needs of the parish church.

The groups are always made up of persons from Mgarr and the tradition dates back to the very first feasts and processions.

The offers are always made at midday on the Sunday following August 15 after the parish priest says the Angelus, the organisers explained.

A large number of people gathered at the side of the parish church to witness the auction.
