American Serena Williams has withdrawn from this week's WTA event in New Haven, citing a thumb injury.

The Australian Open champion has not played since Wimbledon but had been hoping to use the event as a warm-up for the US Open, which begins on August 27.

"Today I tried to have a full practice, hoping that my thumb would feel better, but unfortunately it is still not 100 per cent and I am not able to play at the level that I had hoped for," Williams said in a statement.

Cincinatti Masters semi-final: Federer bt Hewitt 6-3 6-7 7-6.

WTA Rogers Cup semi-final: Henin bt Yan 6-3 6-0.
