The evolution of high-powered engines with increased torque and non-cyclic vibrations has led to the need for improved performances for the filtering of noises and vibrations coming from the engine and gearbox.
For these engines, in particular diesel variants, noise and vibration suppression was achieved by the use of a dual mass flywheel or a flexible flywheel in place of the traditional clutch kit and solid flywheel.
Conventionally, clutch repairs that have a solid flywheel system entail the replacement of a regular clutch kit composed of three pieces (pressure plate, clutch and release bearing).
Since dual mass flywheel and flexible flywheel mechanisms integrate filtering devices that are subject to wear (such as springs and flexible plate) repairs now require the replacement of the conventional three-piece clutch kit as well as the flywheel, which is more costly.
To adapt to these new demands, Valeo has proposed a replacement in two parts: the first is made of a leading dual mass flywheel technology with radial and curved springs suitable for filtering radial vibrations and a flexible flywheel adapted to filter axial vibrations.
These systems are common on German, French, Italian and even some Japanese applications.
The second is a replacement four-piece kit that completely replaces the dual mass flywheel, since new flywheel technologies end up in replacements costing several hundreds of Maltese liri.
The kit is composed of a traditional solid flywheel, a pressure plate, a high-performance clutch and a release bearing. The vibration control function, originally performed by the dual mass flywheel, is transferred to the high performance long travel damper clutch.
This innovative solution has already gained market preference due to its various advantages:
• cost savings of in the region of 40-60 per cent depending on the vehicle and model;
• improved product design resulting in the increased service life of the parts, improved driver comfort and a smoother disengagement of the clutch pedal;
• same installation methodology as the original product; and
• further cost savings, since when the clutch is due for the second replacement the flywheel now being sold need not be changed again - an added bonus.
This product is particularly suited for vehicles subject to intensive use; however, the benefits offered make it everyone's choice.
