The Centru Animazzjoni Missjunarja (CAM) has sent another group of five lay missionaries to Peru. On July 21 they left Malta for the city of Arequipa, where they will be carrying out voluntary work in the three parishes run by the Missionary Society of St Paul.
They parishes are Acequia Alta, which is directed by Fr Frank Cortis, Enace which is run by Fr Alex Busuttil, and La Tomilla, run by Fr Giovanni Cefai. One of the main projects they will be helping out with is caring for around 55 children who live in the Aldea Sagrada Familia, a home for children who have been abandoned or who have family/social problems.
They will also be helping out in other projects, such as visiting very poor families or individuals, helping to prepare daily meals in the public kitchens, and also teaching English and crafts to adults and children.
The five lay missionaries are Pauline Bartolo, Chrissy Borg Cunen, Karen Azzopardi, Stephanie Falzon and Francesca Rizzo.
In Arequipa, the group have joined Maris Camilleri, who has been working there since February 2003. A nurse by profession, Maris works in Enace, and besides nursing care, she helps out in various other projects.
CAM helps to prepare people who are interested in working as lay missionaries in Peru, generally for a year. A new LMSP programme is being planned in the next few months.
Anyone interested can contact CAM by September 1, either by phoning 2144-6435, by e-mailing info@cam.com.mt or by visiting the CAM Website www.cam.com.mt
