Obituary

MAGRO. On August 17, at St Luke's Hospital, VICTOR of Cospicua, residing at Fgura, aged 88, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his children Marion, Grace, Paul and Tessie, Charles, ex-CMTU general secretary, and his wife Monica, his grand-daughter Lorraine and her husband Michael and their son Matthias, his sister Rachel, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital today at 8 a.m. for Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception parish church, Cospicua, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siggiewi, will be greatly appreciated.
Lord, grant him eternal rest.

TONIOLO - FRANCO, formerly of San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, assistant to Mgr Charles G. Vella, who passed away on August 19, 2000. On this seventh anniversary all his Maltese friends are invited to remember their ever-smiling amico.

Lyceum Reunion

The reunion for old Lyceum students being organised by the Association of Lyceum Past Students will be held at the Lyceum in Hamrun on October 12. Archbishop Paul Cremona will also be attending.

Applications For Carnival Contests

Carnival next year will be held on February 1-5, the National Folklore Commission said.

The commission has launched eight contests, with categories for floats, dancing companies, grotesque masks and musical societies.

The grotesque marches (band) category will be divided into two sections, one for musical selection and the other for costume.

There will be three categories dedicated to triumphal floats with three prizes going to the top three winners in each category. Another contest will be dedicated to grotesque masks.

There will be a category dedicated to companies with costume (children) on a decorated float. The company should have between 18 and 32 children aged 13 and younger.

Another contest will feature companies competing with more than nine couples (men and women) up to 40 persons while another will be dedicated to couples with a costume on a float, which will feature 12 couples not exceeding 40 persons.

Applications are being received at the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts at 230, Casa Gaspe, Republic Street, Valletta between August 29 and 31 at noon.

A deposit of Lm20 (€45) is being requested with every application. This deposit will be returned together with the prize after the carnival celebrations but not if the applicant retires from the contest.

Remembrance Mass

A Mass will be said at the Luqa parish church on Tuesday at 7 p.m., the 33rd anniversary of Bishop Emanuel Galea's death.

Bishop Galea, who was born in 1891, was ordained in 1915 and was consecrated bishop at the Mdina Cathedral in 1942. He died at St Luke's Hospital in 1974 after a short illness and is buried at the Zejtun cemetery.

ICT Evening Degree Programme

The Faculty of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) of the University of Malta is accepting applications for a BSc (Hons) ICT evening degree programme.

The course runs for five years and lectures will be held between October and June.

The deadline for applications is August 31.
