Birkirkara are favourites to land the pre-season Carlsberg Tournament after a 2-0 victory over Sliema Wanderers following two goals in the last eight minutes of the match at the Hibs Ground yesterday.
Two players on trial, Paul Tequila, of Portugal, and Central Africa's Boris Sandjo, scored the goals for the Stripes late on. Tequila opened the score with a header and Sandjo made sure on the stroke of time.
A draw would be enough for Birkirkara in tomorrow's match against Msida to win the tournament.
In yesterday's other match, Pietà beat Msida 1-0. Msida keeper Manuel Bartolo committed an own goal in the 82nd minute to hand the Hotspurs the three points.
Standings: Birkirkara 6 points (5-2); Sliema Wanderers 3 (3-2); Pietà Hotspurs 3 (3-3); Msida St Joseph nil (0-4).
Tomorrow: 6 p.m. Msida vs Birkirkara; 8 p.m. Sliema vs Pietà.
