In line with the Malta Rugby Football Union's policy of improving the level of rugby in all areas, local referees have been working hard to obtain more qualifications and international experience over the past two seasons.
The Malta Referees Society has a long-term agreement with the Scottish Rugby Union and, in fact, two courses, Level 1 and 2, have already been staged here.
The MRFU has also been working hard lately to strengthen its co-operation with the Italian Rugby Federation.
To this end, referee Steve Busuttil has just been involved in the Comitato Nazionale Arbitri and has been invited to attend their national refereeing courses.
This season will be the third time Busuttil has been accepted into the Serie A course, due to be held in Orvieto, Umbria, between August 23 and 26.
This is an intensive full-time programme where referees are tested both physically and technically, with written exams following three days of lectures that include video footage of matches at international level.
Busuttil has been training regularly to ensure he achieves the fitness required for this level.
