A European standardisation system is to be set up to help emerging technologies compete in a globalised world.
The decision on the new system was taken during the recent general assembly of CENELEC and CEN held in Cyprus. Malta was represented at the meeting by the director for standardisation at the Malta Standards Authority, Francis Farrugia.
CENELEC is the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation.
CEN and CENELEC agreed to establish a European Standardisation System group tasked with streamlining rules for the development of European standards and to create a high-level mechanism to solve the technical issues that arise from the standardisation of emerging and converging technologies.
They also agreed to discuss conformity assessment and how the initiatives of the European Commission and EFTA to strengthen market surveillance can best be supported.
