Hazard on pedestrian street

Question: When is a pedestrian street not a pedestrian street?

Answer: When it is Archbishop Street between Republic and Merchant Street in Valletta.

For four months now this has been gazetted as a pedestrian street but every day it seems pedestrians have to dive out of the way of fast moving traffic using this section of road.

It seems that neither the government nor the Valletta local council cares for pedestrians who may get hurt.

Is this or is this not a pedestrian street? Someone needs to make up their mind one way or another.

I have personally been struck by a car while walking down this so-called pedestrian street.

Tourists, mothers with their children, old people with their shopping... we are all in constant danger of being hit by cars coming from both directions down this street, which incidentally is illegal.

Clearly the sign that has been put up is grossly inadequate as most drivers claim they did not see it. A clear sign and a barrier of some type are urgently required before someone gets badly injured.

Those in government or council need to take responsibility for this situation. Obviously what is happening now is dangerous to all. Do we have to wait till someone is seriously hurt before something gets done?
