As a resident of Triq Reggie Miller, I got a circular letter from the Gzira local council to inform us of works taking place on August 6.

To my amazement, Dunstan Attard, vice mayor and Anthony Abela councillor have extended their apologies. What about all the other inconveniences? Only people living in this street know what we endure and are still enduring.

The road is full of potholes, we live in the dust from the several building sites none of which have a covering on the façade. Some sites do not have any protection (or a very poor one) from the sheer drops excavated. The pavements are broken or blocked with stone slabs in some parts. Oil and dirt from machinery add to the spoliation. Pavements are blocked by cars parked in driveways that are not big enough to hold a car, thus blocking passage for passersby and obliging us to step down from the pavement risking our lives in such a busy street. Four out of five days, the road - or those leading off it - are closed for some reason or another, often with cranes obstructing the carriage way or obliging us to take alternative, longer routes if we are lucky enough not to be blocked in.

Where are the councillors to see to all this? Or do they only come to Triq Reggie Miller on their door-to-door visit to collect their votes?

Is this what we are voting and paying taxes for? To live in dust and endure all other inconveniences?

Probably their reaction to this letter would be that the circular precisely says that "patching" was taking place on August 6 and I should not be complaining. How many times has this street been patched up and, soon after filling up potholes, we end up with more and deeper holes than before? I suggest the mayor and his entourage come see for themselves.
