I refer to your report (August 5) on the Prime Minister's visit in Australia. The report contains quite a few incorrect statements that need to be rectified.

We have two venues in Victoria where the Maltese language is taught. Every Thursday, students of different age groups and ability in the Maltese Language meet at the Parkville Centre for a one-hour session. These students do not sit for any exams at the end of their course.

The course followed by students attending the Victorian School of Languages leads to the Victorian Certificate of Education. Marks obtained by students in the LOTE (Language Other Than English, in this case the Maltese Language) add points to the overall mark required for entry into a University course.

Once a year, the Maltese Historical Association of Australia (in Melbourne) organises a 'Language Immersion Morning'. The idea is to withdraw the students from a 'classroom' situation and participate in a morning of 'fun' activities related to our Maltese culture. These activities are conducted as much as possible in Maltese. Students from both schools meet at the Parkville centre and spend a morning together.

The committee of the MHA organises these activities for different age groups e.g. debates on Maltese historical/cultural topics, the various styles of ghana, the Knights of St John and other subjects, for the senior students. The junior students have enjoyed folk dancing, singing and popular children's games of the past, to name a few.

I feel these points needed to be clarified as our association was the sole organiser of the 'Language Immersion Morning' when Dr Lawrence Gonzi and his wife Catherine visited the Parkville centre on August 4, where the activities were taking place. May I also point out that the name on the caption under the photo on your front page should read Frances Bonnici.
