Mark Cilia and Mark Saliba, students at the Archbishop's Seminary, Rabat, won the first prize in a competition linked to this year's edition of the Malta Tourism Authority's CHOICE programme, which is organised among secondary school students to heighten tourism awareness and promote careers in the tourism industry.

Students from 27 schools in Malta and Gozo who took part in this year's programme were encouraged to submit a project associated with one of Malta's core tourist values: Heritage, Hospitality and Diversity.

The Archbishop's Seminary students won an educational trip to Budapest sponsored by Corinthia Hotels International (CHI) and Air Malta plc with their project entitled 'A cocktail of diversity'.

The second prize, a weekend break in a locally based hotel, sponsored by CHI, was awarded to Dylan Said and James Camilleri from De La Salle College, Cospicua. Their project was called 'Destination Malta'.

The third prize, consisting of a set of limited edition books, was won by Maria Formosa, Sarah Farrugia and Shelley Aquilina from Convent of the Sacred Heart, St Julian's, with their project entitled 'A taste of Maltese cuisine'.

To date, over 10,000 students have taken part in CHOICE programme, which is organised every year in collaboration with various hotels, restaurants and travel agencies in Malta and Gozo.

It consists of industry representatives delivering talks to present an overview of the industry, its career opportunities and an on-site tour at a hotel, restaurant, travel agency, a Heritage Malta site or the Malta International Airport.

The awarding of prizes and certificates to the students who participated in the programme competition took place during a ceremony held at the Corinthia Palace Hotel on June 21, which was presided over by Joseph Tanti, Head of Human Resources Development, Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), Raymond J. Camilleri, director, Curriculum Management, Ministry of Education, Youth and Employment (MEYE), and George Schembri, CEO, Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA), representing the industry.

The Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) and the University of Malta also hosted stands that provided further information on the current tourism-related courses available.

For information on the programme to be organised next scholastic year, contact the MTA's Industry HR development unit on tel: 2291-5122/4 or e-mail: choice@visitmalta.com.
