England winger David Strettle will miss the Rugby World Cup in France after receiving confirmation that he required surgery on his fractured metatarsal.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) announced yesterday that Strettle would undergo surgery to have a screw inserted into the fifth metatarsal in his left foot, which he fractured during training on Wednesday.

The statement added that the Harlequins player had the operation yesterday and faced 12 weeks on the sidelines.
