The Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday approved, against a number of conditions, an outline development permit for the building of industrial premises comprising 42 units in a rural conservation area at Maghtab, predominantly consisting of agricultural land and farm buildings.

The development will be replacing another.

Proposed uses include storage facilities and a small-scale production and packaging plant for food products.

The warehouse would cater for a large selection of dry frozen foods, agricultural products, grains and cereals, catering and household equipment.

Other storage would consist of hi-tech units for live crustaceans and other seafood in a state of suspended animation, eliminating the need for feeding and waste generation.

Other facilities were required for the storage and re-export of hydrocarbon-based lubricants for sea-vessels and aircraft calling at or passing through Malta.

It was also proposed to include an area for the repair and maintenance of company vehicles, woodwork, metal work and other repairs.

The proposal was amended taking on recommendations by several bodies including the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Malta Resources Authority following an environment planning statement.
