World champion Staviski involved in car accident

Bulgaria's world ice dance champion Maxim Staviski was involved in a car accident near the Black Sea town of Primorsko late on Sunday that killed a 24-year-old man and seriously injured a girl, police said.

Staviski, who claimed Bulgaria's first world figure skating title with partner Albena Denkova in Calgary two years ago and defended it in Tokyo six months ago, was behind the wheel of his Jeep when it crashed into two other vehicles.

According to Bulgarian news agency BGNES, the 29-year-old Staviski was under the influence of alcohol but the Bourgas police department offered no immediate comment on the issue and the skater has not been arrested or charged. Staviski was unhurt in the accident.
