Been there... seen that

I simply love summer and the run-up to it. No matter the heat, I'd rather feel exhausted but look out to see clear skies and the marvellous Mediterranean than the gloomy greyness of boring winters. Finally we tend to shed all that keeps us locked up indoors and make way for cool evenings under the stars, with an ice-cold beer and pulsating music. I've been in a never-ending party-mode since Gozo's version of the trademarked Notte series.

Bands seem to be riding high at the moment, with a number of gigs taking place quite regularly even on the island where time is reputed to have stood still. Johnny, known as Cash, has taken Gozo by storm. He is not a new name for the local scene yet his sudden return with the boys has literally changed the local music scene. Cash and Friends surface in every gig and concert held in the last couple of months and in the main events scheduled throughout summer. These lads are proving that age, energy, aptitude and voice are one hell of a good cocktail making both young and old yell for more. I have followed several gigs of theirs in the last weeks, with venues ranging from the main squares in Victoria to lazy seaside Marsalforn. I particularly loved the one in Marsalforn that stretched beyond the originally scheduled time just because the crowd kept shouting for more. It was a terrific street celebration, so typical of a Mediterranean summer, where talent shone brilliantly, music and liquids flowed generously, while the crowd was as enthusiastic as ever on tranquil Gozo.

Speaking of which, reminds me of the unparalleled vibe the crowd got immediately into at the Bryan Adams concert. Once again, well done to NnG Promotions for an incredible event. Hit upon hit came straight to our hearts as the Canadian's unfaltering voice and guitar turned Luxol into Wembley stadium. You just couldn't help singing along and jumping up and down to the more rocky tunes. I remember Bryan Adams' main hits and can very clearly associate them with memories of the long-gone early teenage years. Yet the singer's force could be felt with ease amongst the 20s and even the younger members of the audience who definitely cannot associate the 90s' hits with personal recollections, but who nonetheless knew the lyrics to every song by heart. This must have been one of the best concerts the islands have seen, not so much for the spectacle as for the amazing atmosphere that the singer and accompanying musicians managed to create. His unassuming persona and his constant flirting with the crowd, not to mention the sensational music, made you wonder if all of this was indeed true or just a long-wished for dream. I cannot imagine what Claire of Zebbug must have felt in those few minutes up on stage.

It looks like my favourite season will be bringing more live concerts and gigs, with quite a few names making it to our shores shortly. Gozo has its fair share even this month, though it looks likely that I will be making my way to the ferry terminal quite often during non-working hours. I just love the sounds of guitars, drums, the al fresco of Maltese summers and the natural companions of beer and wine. Where better place to be at this time of year.
