Audiences at the Malta Arts Festival 2007 will certainly have plenty of variety, music wise. For example: This evening at 9 p.m in the Grandmaster's Palace courtyard, Valletta, virtuoso Maltese violinist Carmine Lauri will be giving a recital along with the English pianist John Alley.
Then tomorrow evening in the same venue and at the same time, there will be a concert of Egyptian music for ud, violin and voice by Egyptian soloists Hazem Shahin & Aymen Asfour.
Then next Monday and Tuesday the extremely talented musicians from Spiteri Lucas Entertainment present a medley of popular music in Back in Time. (See page eleven).
On August 8 the Pure Brass Quintet from Malta present a recital entitled: Movie Spectacular in the Grandmaster's Palace courtyard.
Then for the next three nights Etnika will take centre stage, see below.
On August 13 at 9 p.m the Music Room at St James will be the venue for a piano recital by the talented young Maltese pianist Giselle Grima.
Back out to the Grandmaster's Palace courtyard on August 14 when Maltese and Italian musicians join forces to present Silk Road Suite for cello and two percussionists. Silk Road Suite has been devised by Maltese avant garde musician Ruben Zahra. Italian cellist Luca Peverini and The Ars Ludi Percussion Duo will be the musicians involved.
More cello on August 15 when Italian cellist Enrico Dindo combines with fellow countryman Pietro De Maria - piano, to give a recital in the Grandmaster's Palace courtyard at 9 p.m.
Emphasising the quality of the artists appearing, one of our very finest musicians, classical guitarist Simon Schembri will be in action in the courtyard of Auberge de Castille on August 17 at 9 p.m.
There will be another classical guitar recital on August 18, also in the Auberge de Castille courtyard, when Spanish guitarist Carlos Bonell will be the solo attraction. As we come towards the end of the festival, jazz is catered for on August 17 and 18 when Andrew Alamango produces Jazz Fringe in the Grandmaster's Palace courtyard at 9 p.m. This promises to be a feast of real jazz and the line-up for both nights comprises Sandro Zerafa's White Russian Quintet, Dominic Galea & co, The Synapse Trio and the Julien Daian Quintet featuring DJ Borz.
Various forms of dance are also catered for in this year's Malta Arts Festival. Last month Francesca Grima's passionate Puerto Flamenco set the festival alight and during August contemporary dance takes centre stage. Collectif KO from Marseille will give two performances on August 11 and 12 at the MITP Theatre, both nights at 9 p.m.
There really is something for everyone musically in the August section of the Malta Arts Festival 2007.
