Recently many well-known personalities have been coming to Malta, such as Sting and Bryan Adams, to name just a couple. One usually bought a ticket, went early to the venue, and enjoyed a well-organised show.

Then MTV advertised its show for free at the Granaries in Floriana. Being free, it was bound to attract hundreds of thousands, especially with internationally successful singers. My daughter and I decided to give the event a shot. This time we were determined to have good seats and purchased two VIP tickets, costing a massive Lm30 each.

Arriving at the Granaries, we were treated like ping-pong balls by the security personnel, some of them showing us to one entrance, others telling us to queue up in another area. Finally, everyone found the place they had to queue in. The people in charge let us in at around 6.45 p.m., which is ridiculous, seeing that everyone only had 15 minutes to settle down. The show was well on its way when the people stopped entering the VIP area. The so-called Golden Circle turned out to be an area closed off by barriers, surrounding the red-carpet area in which the invited persons got to stay. The whole Golden Circle was very far from the stage and everyone was grumbling. People who had got in for free were all better off than we were. At least, they were placed at the centre, rather than at the side.

The people who had paid Lm30 were given a wristband to enter, while the invited people were given a different wristband. One well-known local personality strangely had a number of wristbands in his jeans pocket and when someone (without an invitation) wanted to have access to the comfortable red-carpet area and called him over to ask the favour, he would turn his back on the audience and push a wristband into the person's hands.

We thank MTV for a great concert worth watching. Thanks are also due to the organisers for taking for a ride those people who paid.
