The Malta Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises - GRTU has called for a revision of tax bands in the forthcoming budget, arguing that the Maltese were among the most heavily taxed people.
The rate of 35 per cent no longer made sense in a country where growth depended on the efforts of those who worked and wanted to boost the private sector.
The government should introduce a threshold for the self-employed where they would not pay any tax unless they reach a certain pre-determined level.
This is because the self-employed face VAT at 18 per cent and have to pay hefty surcharge bills, the GRTU said.
