His mother promised Quicky that now he was old enough to care for a dog, he could own one.

He wanted to have a dog for a pet. Most of his friends had one. They had dogs of different breeds. His favourite was a Dalmatian. His father said it was too big to live with them in their little house.

The next day Quicky's father got him a wonderful ordinary puppy.

It was a light brown ball of fun with a long tail. Its tip was black, so were its nose and eyes. It was a boy and he called him Black Tip.

Quicky gave him some milk but Black Tip remained on the cushion in the box that Quicky's mum had prepared for him. The puppy didn't move. He was scared and Quicky thought he wasn't fun.

When it was night, everyone slept except Black Tip, who was crying. Daddy had to keep the puppy company. In the morning Black Tip slept. Quicky realised why his parents had told him he that he wasn't mature enough to be an owner of a dog.

By and by, Black Tip grew. Though he sometimes got into mischief, he was fun and Quicky's best friend. One day, when they went for a holiday by the sea Black Tip was barking for attention. He jumped into the water where a man was finding it difficult to stay afloat. The man held on to Black Tip until Quicky threw him his lilo to grab. The man was safe. He happened to be the mayor.

On the day of the town feast a special prize was given to Quicky and Black Tip, who was titled "Hero".
