Almost 200 boxes containing smuggled alcohol were seized as a trailer was about to be unloaded in Qormi, the Customs Department said yesterday.

A spokesman said Customs officers said intervened soon after the trailer was opened. The trailer had arrived from Sicily a few hours earlier, during the night, on board the catamaran.

On inspecting the boxes, Customs Department personnel found 1,888 bottles of whisky, vodka and rum - in 198 boxes - on which excise duty had not been paid.

Inside the trailer also were about 3,000 boxes/packets of toilet paper, washing liquid and detergent and mineral water.

Customs seized all the cargo, including the trailer.

The police were informed about the case and investigations are under way.
