Arnold Cassola, the Maltese Green MP in the Italian Parliament, has tabled a parliamentary question on the nuclear reactor which is to be built in Libya.
Prof. Cassola asked Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema whether he is informed about the fact that French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently signed an agreement with Libya over the provision of technical aid and material which will help Libya build a nuclear reactor, to be used, supposedly, for the desalination of water.
Due to the fact that this nuclear reactor will be located only a few kilometres away from Italian territory, particularly Lampedusa, and other Mediterranean countries within the EU territory, such as Malta, Arnold Cassola asked Mr D'Alema whether he agrees that Italy should ask for round-table discussions by France, the European Commission, Libya and other concerned states to discuss issues related to the prevention of nuclear accidents.
