A solid silver tabernacle adds to the splendour of the neo-Byzantine chapel at St George's basilica, in Victoria.

The tabernacle, which rises seven feet in the form of the ancient pyx that was in use at the basilica up to the 16th century, was blessed on St George's Day by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech.

The tabernacle, designed by Joseph Sagona and built in hard wood by George Farrugia, was made by Laga Co. Ltd of Luqa. The design was suggested by the archpriest, Mgr Joseph Farrugia.

The tabernacle door features the Byzantine icon of Jesus.

This prestigious addition to the silver plate of St George's basilica would not have come about were it not for the generosity of a benefactor who forked out the money for the tabernacle, a spokesman said.
