German title: Viktoria Berlin won the 1894 German championship yesterday - delayed by 113 years because their opponents Hanau could not afford to travel the 400kms at the time to play in Berlin for the final. The two clubs, who have long since played in the regional, amateur divisions, played out a 1-1 draw yesterday after Viktoria won the first leg 3-0 in Hanau last week. In 1894, Viktoria had been declared champions by default, but that led to complaints that their victory was unfair.

Hunger strike: Granada 74 president Carlos Marsa called off his hunger strike after securing the use of a football stadium for his second division team. He began his protest two days ago when Granada local council refused to allow his club to share the Los Carmenes with the city's other two sides. Motril, who are 70 km away near the south coast, have agreed to allow the club to use a stadium there.

Vieira to quit: Iraq coach Jorvan Vieira is set to part company with his team after today's Asian Cup final. He said: "If my contact was for six months and not for two they would have had to take me to the hospital for crazy people," he said.

In France: French champions Lyon won the pre-season Trophy of Champions for the sixth year in succession by beating Sochaux 2-1 yesterday. The match was a special occasion for new Lyon coach Alain Perrin, who replaced Gerard Houllier after helping Sochaux lift the French Cup last season. The Ligue 1 season starts next Saturday.
