Muscular Dystrophy Group's work for Melita Cable

I refer to the recent news that GMT Communications Partners have acquired the majority shareholding of Melita Cable plc.

This news is of major interest to the Muscular Dystrophy Group of Malta (MDG). Since starting its operations in Malta, Melita Cable has entrusted the MDG to handle its packing of bills, leaflets and other promotional material.

Melita Cable had expressed a wish to allocate this work to an NGO and Mr Bezzina of the National Commission for Persons with Disability had suggested the MDG.

The work we perform for Melita Cable earned the group a substantial part of its annual budget and has helped us to offer a personal assistance scheme to our members. Having a regular income has also enabled us to augment our home- based physiotherapy service and has also given us the courage to implement other benefits.

The availability of an organised and disciplined work force has also generated other similar jobs for other clients.

But above the monetary considerations, it has motivated those of our members who are directly involved in the work, to come regularly to our office in Gzira to engage in worthwhile productive part-time employment in a sheltered environment, giving them much satisfaction in earning a wage packet.

For all this, we are grateful to Melita Cable, and we trust that though his continued shareholding in the new set-up, Mr Joe Gasan may be instrumental in continuing and perhaps enhancing the co-operation that we have enjoyed over the past 14 years.
