The packaging of our products has a very important role as it keeps our products fresh, and also protects the product when it is being transported from one place to another. Although it is indispensable for a product to be packaged properly, packaging generates waste. In fact, a large percentage of waste is generated from packaging. The GreenDot system guarantees the collection and recycling of that packaging.
The GreenDot mark is that rounded symbol with circular arrows found on the packaging of food, drinks, perfumes, clothes, electronic and other products. Companies put the GreenDot on their products to show consumers, retailers and authorities that they are financing the collection and recycling of packaging.
Pro Europe is an international organisation which runs the GreenDot system. Being part of this organisation, GreenPak manages the GreenDot mark in Malta. GreenPak is authorised by MEPA to run a collection and recycling scheme across Malta and Gozo and its aim is to recover and recycle packaging and stop it from being landfilled.
GreenPak believes that each one of us can contribute to the environment, and with this in mind an information campaign has just been launched. GreenPak is running ongoing surveys at various leading supermarkets to monitor consumers' understanding and to encourage them to contribute to the recycling of packaging. Consumers help to recycle packaging by buying products which show the GreenDot mark.
By doing so, they would be supporting companies that are financing the collection and recycling of packaging. This campaign will be supported by educational programmes on television, radios and other means in the coming weeks.
