The EcoSchool council at Carmelo Caruana Primary School, Safi, which forms part of St Benedict's College, ended its first scholastic year with two special activities.
In May, all pupils and staff collected Lm48 and presented it to Glenn Bugeja, representing the Ministry of Rural Affairs and the Environment, to support the 34U campaign and plant six trees in the school's name in one of the national afforestation areas.
In June, an outing was organised to the new Civic Amenity Centre at Mriehel, for all the EcoSchool Council members, including the representatives from all classes, as well as all Year 6 pupils who had just completed their final school-leaving examinations.
WasteServ staff took us around the site and explained the importance of making good use of its facilities for the collection and separation of bulky waste.
During the school year the council held regular meetings, which were followed up in practice with the ongoing waste separation project in all classes, the conservation of energy by using electricity and water prudently, and the 'green' embellishment of the school building and grounds.
During the next scholastic year, the EcoSchool council will continue educating all the pupils and their families to take care of our school and the environment, and in the process attain Green Flag recognition.
