About 100 people received first aid, mostly after fainting, during the Isle of MTV concert at the granaries, in Floriana, on Thursday night.

Two had to be transferred to hospital, the principal medical officer in charge of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Services within the Health Division, Denis Vella Baldacchino, said.

Staff from the Health Department, St John's Ambulance and the Red Cross manned the four clinics that were set up at the corners of the granaries.

While the St John's Rescue Corps manned the Mall side, the Civil Protection Department and its volunteers, manned the Catholic Institute side.

Besides the clinic, there was a mobile communications and control unit, which served as a hub, seven ambulances and a major accident response van, equipped to respond to a serious mishap.

Twenty Health Department staff were there, including eight emergency doctors, eight emergency nurses and a pharmacist. Altogether, including the CPD staff and volunteers and the volunteers from NGOs, there were about 140 medics on duty. There was excellent collaboration and coordination between the emergency services and the NGOs, Dr Vella Baldacchino said.

In spite of the success of Thursday's operation, Dr Vella Baldacchino hopes for a meeting with everyone involved to see what could be done better next time. To help ease the heat, organisers were distributing water - through the Civil Protection Department and security personnel - supplied by Farsons, free of charge from four points. However, Floriana residents yesterday complained about the state of the streets.

One person said: "It is good to have concerts and activities but one should also plan for the aftermath. Organisers should make sure the right support services are in place. "The subways this morning were flooded with urine... The stench was overwhelming...," a reader who works at Floriana said. Another pointed out that parts of Floriana, ordinarily reserved for parking, were full of beer bottles compounding the parking problem.
