Globalisation should be based on solidarity, the general secretary of the General Workers' Union, Tony Zarb, said when addressing a Reggie Miller Foundation seminar.

Mr Zarb said that globalisation should be a tool which generated rather than hindered employment opportunities.

He said workers could not trust the current model of globalisation when the informal economy was growing everyday threatening working conditions and formal employment

Globalisation had also increased child labour and the International Labour Organisation had an ongoing campaign on this which the GWU formed part of.

Mr Zarb said there was an element of child labour also in Malta and the union was working to destroy it.
