My wife and I have just returned to the UK after spending a week's holiday in Malta, our fourth visit in just over 20 years.

It was impossible not to notice that the public transport situation on the island, especially in and around the Valletta, Sliema and St Julians areas, remains as problematic as ever (too little available information for passengers, a road infrastructure clearly groaning under the increasing demands, buses and abrasive attitudes of some drivers that do not necessarily enhance the overall public transport experience, etc.). However, what was an unpleasant surprise for us were the huge numbers of students along this route and, especially, around Paceville. Large packs of students from many different nationalities roaming the streets late into the night, many of them were rude, ill mannered and inconsiderate. We witnessed an unprovoked attack by four young males on another young male on St George's beach on the night of July 8 as two G4S security patrolmen walked on, turning a blind eye to the unseemly goings-on. The hordes of young females who encouraged this assault, almost baying for this boy's blood, was equally distressing to see. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and the attack quickly ended without major consequence.

Rudeness and "pushing-in" at bus queues, especially during the evenings, was commonplace.

Despite these observations we managed to enjoy yet another wonderful holiday on Malta and fully anticipate a return soon. However, maybe next time, in view of these issues, we will have to reconsider our choice of hotel location and add to the already groaning road congestion by hiring a car.
