McDonald's in Malta is recycling cooking oil used in the company's eight restaurants to turn it into bio-diesel, which is then used to fuel its fleet of trucks.

A company spokesman said cooking oil, technically called shortening, is collected regularly from all of the eight restaurants on the island for conversion by the Edible Oil Refining Company (EORC) in Marsa. "Our used shortening is one of the best bio-products on the market. It has minimal impurities. Some 236,000 litres have been turned into bio-diesel by EORC since they started producing bio-diesel for us.

"Our distribution centre is using far less diesel for their trucks than ever before," the spokesman added.
