Gold for Cassar Torreggiani in long jump event

FISEC flag passed on to Malta at closing ceremony

The FISEC Games flag is in the hands of the Maltese officials after accepting it from their counterparts of Hungary's Nyiregyhaza during yesterday's closing ceremony at the Sostoi Stadium.

Another march past of athletes marked the end of the Games which saw the Maltese round up the final day of competitions with a gold medal won by Andrew Cassar Torreggiani in track and field.

Cassar Torreggiani cleared 6.53m in the long jump to eclipse the results of two Portuguese athletes who had to settle for second and third places. It was the first time for a Maltese track and field athlete to win first place in the FISEC long jump event.

Monalisa Camilleri continued with her fine showings in Hungary after crossing the line in second place in the 3,000m race.

The silver medal was her third this week after the ones won in the 1,500m and 800m races.

In table tennis singles, Jessica Pace won her matches against Portuguese duo Almedia, 3-1, and Perefina, 3-0, but lost her next three fixtures to Dutch and French opponents.

Pace finished fifth in the final classification.

The final ranking of the boys table tennis players was: Andrew Gambina, seventh, Daniel Portelli, ninth, and James Dawson, 10th.

The basketball girls chalked up a comfortable victory yesterday after beating Spain 'A' 73-33 with the top-scorer for Sandro Farrugia's team being Leanne Sciberras who potted 21 points.

Joseph Tanti's handball team suffered a heavy defeat when going down to Austria 35-14 in the final game of the tournament.

On the administrative side, Malta will host the 2008 FISEC Games but the 2009 venue is still undecided and most probably a decision will be taken during the general assembly to be held in Paris in November.

The likely hosts in two years' time will either be Portugal or the United States (California).

Yesterday, FISEC International president Math Pieters delivered the closing speech following that of secretary general Gianfranco Selvaggi. Various awards were distributed including that for Fair Play.

Bro Martin Borg, FISEC Malta chairman, then accepted the FISEC flag from Bela Kereczi, head of the FISEC committee in Hungary.
