The mayor and executive secretary of the Senglea local council have filed a judicial protest against the Didon, a ship berthed at Malta Shipyards, holding it responsible for damage caused to property when soot and oil were emitted by the vessel's boiler.

The local council members explained that on July 21, at about 6 p.m., soot and oil were emitted from the Didon and deposited themselves onto movable and immovable property in the vicinity. In fact, three-fourths of the area was covered in the sooty substance and, as a result, a number of Senglea residents and the local council suffered considerable damages.

They held the Didon liable in the damages suffered.

On Monday, the captain of the Didon, Salah Badr Abbas Rashwan, 50, of Egypt, chief engineer Dahech Ali, 42, of Tunisia and the superintendent Lotfi Ben Laroussi Ben-Aissa, 53, of Tunisia were arraigned.

They were each ordered to pay the maximum fine of Lm300 after they admitted to allowing the boiler of the vessel to emit smoke and to damaging property in the area.

Lawyers José Herrera and Shazoo Ghaznavi signed the protest.
