People who use their BOV Cashlink cards for purchases throughout next month will be helping out Dar tal-Providenza.

An automatic 3c (€0.07) donation will be made by the bank for every purchase transaction throughout the month.

The month-long campaign - Cashlink Cards for Charity - will not involve any additional costs to customers or retailers because the contribution will be made by the bank, Charles Borg, executive head at the chief executive's office, said.

"However, the more people use their Cashlink to pay, the higher the global donation the bank will make to Dar tal-Providenza at the end of this campaign," Mr Borg explained.

Speaking during a press conference yesterday, Mr Borg said the campaign had the potential to raise thousands of liri. This is the third consecutive year the bank is holding the campaign, which has raised thousands of liri over the past two years. In 2005, funds were raised for the Eden Foundation, and last year the beneficiary was Caritas.

"We feel this campaign provides our customers with an added incentive to use such a straight-forward and efficient method of payment. Through this incentive all parties stand to gain because customers enjoy the convenience of the BOV cards while Dar tal-Providenza benefits from the resulting donation," Mr Borg said.

Dar tal-Providenza director Mgr Lawrence Gatt said the home worked to improve the quality of life of persons born with impairments, both mental and physical, while relieving the strain borne by their families. He went on to describe how the organisation depends heavily on fund raising initiatives to provide the highest possible levels of service.
