The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association has welcomed the amendment to the Trading Licences Act whereby bottle shops and confectioneries are not allowed to sell alcoholic beverages after 9 p.m.

The amendment comes at the right time, it said, alongside the recent changes to the law banning the sale of alcoholic drinks to persons under 16.

The MHRA said customers of such shops were mainly youngsters who were buying alcohol at supermarket prices.

It called for the new regulations to be rigorously enforced.
