Camilleri nets silver in 800m
Two bronze medals for Andrea Agius
Malta opened its account at this year's FISEC Games, being held in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, after winning four medals by the close of yesterday's competition.
The best result of the day for Malta was achieved on the track where Monalisa Camilleri finished second in the girls' 800 metres.
Camilleri covered the two-lap race in a personal best of 2.23 to take silver.
Ezekiel Micallef and Andrew Cassar Torreggiani have both qualified for tomorrow's 100m final.
Swimmers Andrea Agius and Nicole Cremona were the first Maltese athletes to climb on the podium yesterday. Competing in the 200m breastroke final, Agius placed third in an impressive 2:35.02. The Maltese swimmer quickly recouped his energies to add a second bronze medal in the 50m breastroke.
Cremona was the other medal winner in the pool for Malta yesterday. She touched home third in the 100 metres backstroke.
Melinda Sue Micallef just missed out on a place on the podium when finishing fourth in the 50m freestyle.
Malta's girls basketball team had a disappointing start to the Games after they lost their first game to Hungary, 74-49. Rebecca Naudi and Christine Tonna were Malta's top scorers with 10 points each.
Basketball coach Sandro Farrugia admitted afterwards that his players struggled to cope with Hungary's fast play. He added that the girls' team is full of new faces and thus, this tournament should serve them as a good experience for future competitions. Today, Malta face Portugal.
In the handball competition, Malta's boys team suffered their second defeat, this time at the hands of tournament favourites France 28-17.
The French dominated the match, effectively sealing their victory in the first half, by the end of which they had already amassed a 10-goal lead.
Mark Borg netted four times for Malta while Luke Zammit, Peter Naudi and Mihajlo Savic each grabbed a hat-trick. Spain are Malta's opponents today.
