In spite of its small size, Malta is a great country - not in a superficial, pretentious way but in the reality of a glorious history which shaped this tiny island into a sovereign state.

True, we experienced very bad moments but who would have told subsequent Maltese generations that one day we would be discussing our fate and future with our previous rulers?

Let us not forget that irrespective of political allegiances we have achieved a lot.

Maybe we are now in one of our difficult moments before a general election having lost faith in the major political parties and not knowing yet what to do to safeguard our serenity.

We certainly need to rethink rather than go on the same tramlines of thought, political rivalry and mud-slinging.

Social realities are a good basis to start with.

1. Do we still believe in values and principles? We cannot say we hold none because that means we do not believe in values and principles which is another belief in itself.

2. If we truly believe in political morality, we must do our best to choose those who clearly show they have it. There are still good politicians. Unfortunately it is the electorate who makes the wrong choice if the claim is for political morality and that does not mean all and sundry. Through accusing and mud-slinging nothing is gained because it is the bad citizen too who abuses positions of trust. How many of these people are still uncovered? If we have no trust in political parties it is because these things do not happen only to one party.

3. The more wrongdoers are uncovered the cleaner the system will work. It is good that there is a machinery that can be democratically trustworthy.

4. It is now time to sort out the fibres that weave our society. That is not simply an election item.

As we all once stood for democracy we should all now stand for political morality by stating our political principles and hold on to them. Forget about allegiance if the principles are not there.

How then can we have what we think should be good governance? Although, it is not a bad thing if allegiance is given to those who give political morality high priority irrespective of votes, even if they cannot wave their magic wands to remedy political mistakes and consequences.

Let us all support a good cause rather than lose ourselves with short-sighted superficial talk to remedy one or two problems. Let us sort out mistakes which can be remedied from much greater ones which will leave us losers for an indefinite time.
