St George's Bay, Malta's first Blue Flag beach, became a centre of educational activities yesterday as bathers were able to learn about marine life and how the bay is being managed.

The activities, which Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech launched during a press conference held on site, included beach cleaning, divers cleaning the seabed, a demonstration by the Oil Response Unit, activities by Nature Trust, and a lecture on the marine environment.

The bay, which has just been extended with 800 square metres of sand, has attracted many people since it was completed.

With their facilities and status of cleanliness and the water's bathing quality, management and security, Blue Flag beaches are sought after by tourists, Dr Zammit Dimech said, adding that the government aimed for more Blue Flag beaches on the islands.
