Stuart Pearce has been appointed coach of the England Under-21 side on a two-year contract, the FA said yesterday.

Pearce, who won 78 caps for England, had been doing the job on a part-time basis since February and took the U-21 team to the semi-finals of the European Championship in the Netherlands in June, where they lost out on penalties to the host country.

"By taking the job full-time, I will be able to build close relationships with clubs and the coaches of other England youth teams," said Pearce, who lost his job as Manchester City manager in May.
