Real estate firm Perry Ltd has bought a Giuseppe Calì painting, the company said.
The portrait, an oil on canvas, shows an officer of the 13th Bengal Lancers while stationed on the island in 1878.
It was bought in England, having been in the possession of an English family.
"The Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace in Valetta as well as many Maltese and Gozitan churches have a number of remarkable examples of Calì's work.
"The return of this painting to our shores enriches our heritage", Francis Spiteri Paris, the firm's managing director, said.
The painting will be exhibited at the offices of Perry Ltd in Tower Road, Sliema where it may be viewed by the public.
It will feature on the front cover of the forthcoming issue of Perry's property magazine out with The Sunday Times on July 29.
Perry's property magazine is produced by Mediamaker Ltd, a member of the Allied Group of Companies.
